Traveling With Diabetes
1. Pre-Planning
a. Passport updates plus secondary ID
b. Medical Insurance Cards
c. Know the area you will be traveling to – specifically hospital, American consulate, how to contact medical help in case of an emergency.
d. Know your airline requirements
e. Obtain a letter from your medical provider stating all supplies you will be taking in your carry on.
f. Consider purchasing travel insurance
g. Advance Passenger Confirmation
2. Carry On
a. All medications – Tylenol, Zofran, Glucagon, Ketosticks, extra meter with extra test strips, extra pump, extra reservoirs, infusion sets, alcohol, 2x2 gauze, 1-2 insulin vials plus pens, and both basal insulin and meal insulin and pen needles.
b. All medications need to be kept in original box with Rx label.
c. To keep insulin cool, a paucho can be used.
d. Hard copy of prescriptions for travel
3. Person
a. Medical ID
b. Medication list, allergies, medical history for wallet
4. Day of Travel
a. Present letter and let TSA staff know you have juice for medical reasons.
b. Wear pump in front and keep visible.
5. Altitude and Pump
a. Beware of blood sugar changes when ascending and descending. If you wear an insulin pump, discuss a course of action with your provider.
6. Hotel
a. Ask for a mini refrigerator
